Description
I am offering for sale this M17 Sohlberg steel helmet. Russian army ordered from Finnish industry 600 000 M17 steel helmets in 1917. V.W. Holmberg's factory manufactured 500 000 M17 helmets and G.W. Sohlberg manufactured 100 000 M17s in Helsinki. Some M17 helmets were not delivered for Tsar's Red Army and so those undelivered M17 helmets became the first steel helmets of Finnish army after the War of Independence. These Russian M17 steel helmets were short lived because these helmet were replaced during the 1920's with German style helmets. First German helmets arrived in 1922 and the last in 1929.I owned once a M17 steel helmet which had 1922 stamped liner. I have also seen a couple of 1921 dated photos were Finnish soldiers are wearing these M17 steel helmets.
This is a little strange M17 helmet for me because it does have wider chin-strap lugs compared to other similar M17 helmets I have seen last 20 years. The chin-strap is second type which was used usually with Civil Defence and Fire Brigade used black painted M17 helmets which had leather liners. Also the gloss green paint differs from matt painted green helmets I have seen during my collectibles years. The chin-strap has number 57 which has been made by ink. I guess it is size of the helmet. The cloth liner material is also new style for me but looks very Finnish army style anyway. It looks to have been reissued, probably during the 1920's. I bought this helmet from Helsinki based Antique Shop.
Well 600 000 were manufactured in Finland (Helsinki) with two different companies in 1917. There are rumors that unknown amount of M17 steel helmets were manufactured for Finnish army after the WW1. I have seen only some 20 green painted M17 helmets of total 600 000+ manufactured M17 helmets. Maybe this is the one which was manufactured after WW1 for Finnish army.
