Description
ORIGINAL Imperial Russian DECLARATION of WAR flyer addressed to the sailors of the Baltic Fleet, at the start of World War One.This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL document from 1914, not a later issue, reprint or replica!
The document is typographically printed, single sided. The text is a decree of the commander of the Russian Baltic Fleet stationed on the Armored Cruiser
Rurik
(flagship of the Baltic Fleet), located at that moment off the Finnish naval fortress of Sveaborg (now part of the city of Helsinki.)
The document is dated 19 July 1914 according to the Julian calendar used in Imperial Russia at the time, which corresponds with 1 August 1917 according to the western Gregorian calendar. Addressed to all sailors of the Baltic Fleet, it says that this is a glorious day “for which we live, which we have awaited, and for which we have prepared.” It calls for all seamen to forget personal affairs and concentrate on defending the Motherland. Little did the author of the proclamation know that the Baltic Fleet sailors would eagerly participate in the overthrow of the Tsar in February 1917, and then form the core of the armed gangs of Anarchists and radical Socialists that deposed the legal Provisional Government in November 1917 – thus plunging Russia into the Civil War and subsequent decades of catastrophes.
The document is in FAIR to GOOD condition. The lower left corner is clipped, and there are multiple small tears and wrinkles at the margins, but the text is completely intact. There are no stains or soiling, only mild age toning. This exceptionally rare historical document will look great when properly framed and mounted on the wall in the library of a naval history buff or Russian militaria collector!
